The properties of aspen and pine wood fibres as a result of different tree growth conditions

This paper describes the pine and aspen wood properties from dry site Vacciniosa, wetlands Sphagnosa, drained mineral soils Myrtillosa mel., and drained peaty soils Myrtillosa turf. mel. The Sphagnosa soil conditions resulted in lower pine wood density and lower cellulose content as compared to the tree from dry site. The measurements of the content of metal traces in soil and in the trees using AAS spectrometry did not reveal any interconnection. Pulp Quality Index (POI), fibre dimensions and strength properties were determined for the sulphate pulp fibres obtained from the respective samples. Except the fibre length (longer fibres in pulp from Vacciniosa site trees) no notable differences were revealed. The values of the degree of polymerisation (9DP) were the highest for cellulose in aspen trees from Myrtillosa mineral soil. Among the cellulose samples from pine trees the highest DP value was found for cellulose in Vacciniosa soils pine trees. We conclude that some important wood and wood pulp fibres properties are influenced by trees growth conditions. The results of the study tend to confirm the opinion that the initial wood sorting by forest type and wood density may be useful in pulp mills and other wood processing entities.
