These studies were conducted in the Department of Plant Breeding andGenetics, University of Arid Agriculture, Rawalpindi during 1997-98. Heterosisfor different characters were calculated over mid, better and top parentsvalues in ten crosses of barley (Hordeum vulgare) involving five parents viz.one local (Haider-93) and four exotic (Suffer, DC-B/SEN, Tocte-II andCongona). For mid parent, average heterotic effects were positive for allcharacters except plant height and spike length. For better parent, effectswere positive only for flag leaf area and 1000 grain weight. Effects werefound negative for top parent for all the characters. However, three crossesHaider-93 x DC-B/SEN, Haider-93 x Sutter and Sutter x DC-B/SEN were foundmost promising. Average heterosis for grain yield per plant was attributedmainly to number of spikes per plant (7.49%), 1000 grain weight (4.82%), andnumber of grains per spike (4.79%) and particularly to flag leaf area (16.52%).
