Effect of sodium chloride salinity on germination and establishment ofgreen gram seedlings

Five local and highly advance green gram genotypes were tested for theirsalt tolerance in laboratory and field conditions at electrical conductivity (EC)of 4, 8, 12 dS m-1 and control (distilled water). The possibility, that thenature of inhibitory effect of NaCI was different during imbibitions comparedto germination and seedling emergence of green gram was investigated. Adecrease in the imbibitions of water indicated osmotic effects and an increasein dry weight of embryonic tissues, i.e. radicle, plumule and endosperm,showed ionic toxicity. It appeared that ionic toxicity had a greater effect thanosmotic, on the growth of embryonic tissues, as was evident during and aftergermination in laboratory and field conditions.
