A group of eight exotic and indigenous maize hybrids were field evaluatedfor days to tasselling, anthesis, silking, anthesis to silking interval, plant andear height, grain moisture content and 100-kernel weight at NWFP AgriculturalUniversity, Peshawar, during Kharif season of 2003. A randomized completeblock design with four replicates was used. Significant genetic variation existedamong hybrids for days to tasseling, anthesis, silking, anthesis to silkinginterval, plant and ear height, grain moisture content and 100-kernel weight.Hybrid C-919 (released by Monsanto) took significantly more days to tasseling(58.0 days), anthesis (60.8 days) and silking (63.0 days) than other hybrids.Hybrid NCML59 x SP7 (released by NARC, Islamabad) was earlier among thehybrids by taking only 52.0, 54.8 and 59.3 days to tasseling, anthesis andsilking, respectively. Anthesis to silking interval was only 1.3-days in Hi-Corn,while 4.5 days in hybrid NCML59 x SP7, FRH2001, NCML59 x SP7 and 3025-Wwere shortest among hybrids having plant height of 149.4, 151.4 and 154.1 cm,respectively, while Hi-Corn was tallest in height (199.2 cm). The hybridsexhibited strong relationship among plant and ear heights. Moisture content atharvest was lowest in grains of FRH2001 (20.3%), while highest in C-919 (25.3%).Hybrids Hi-Corn and 3025-W had highest weight of 44.0 and 43.4 g per 100-kernel, while FRH2001, NCML119 x SP7 and NCML104 x SP7 had minimum 100-kernel weight. The existing wide range of genetic variability for morphologicaland reproductive traits among the exotic hybrids suggests their utilization inthe indigenous maize breeding programmes.
