In the three-year field experiment (1998-01) the influence of the level (0-60-150 kg N) and once-over vs. split application on the yield of grain, protein and metabolic energy from 1 ha, two varieties of winter wheat were determined. It was shown that a significant increase of grain yield for Elena took place up to 90 kg N/ha (60 + 30) whereas for Sakwa up to 120 kg N/ha applied in two periods. In the compared varieties Elena yielded 5 percent higher than Sakwa. The increasing doses of nitrogen caused a regular decrease of metabolic energy in the grain
