Estimation of water flux through the birch trees on peat-moorsh soil using "sap-flow" method

The analysis of the results of the performed research confirmed, that the "sap flow" method is appropriate for continuos, non-destructive and accurate measurements of the water flow process through the birch trees. The analysis of the water flow through the birch trees trunks of the diameter ranging from 13.3 mm to 13.6 mm and the height of the trees about 2.5 m growing on peat-moorsh soil (MtIIcb) in Biebrza valley (Poland) allowed the recognition of its daily cycle. The maximum water flux in daily cycle was observed during forenoon hours and than the rapid decrease (up to complete disappearance) of water flux was observed. After that the water flux started to increase again during the late night hours and than continued gradual increase during the morning hours. The maximum hourly values of measured water flow were in the range from about 40 g to about 140 g. The presented results of the water flux through birch trees were measured during the period from 3th to 7th of October 2004. It is necessary to repeat the measurements of water flow through the same birch trees in the future because the period of measurements was relatively short and represented the end of vegetation period
