Cytogenetic and molecular investigations as part of genetic studies on the African Ostrich (Struthio camelus) with special reference to the DNA fingerprinting technique
2003
Kawka, M. (Polska Akademia Nauk, Jastrzebiec (Poland). Inst. Genetyki i Hodowli Zwierzat)
Beside traditional methods used in population genetics the genetic characterization of the African Ostrich may also include molecular and cytogenetic methods, using mini- and microsatellites as well as chromosome markers. Due to the as yet insufficient knowledge about the ostrich genome, the DNA fingerprinting techinque based on minisatellite sequences is currently the principal tool for the determination of genetic structure parameters. For this reason, the review, beside presenting the current situation in molecular and cytogenetic studies on ostriches, contains also detailed description of the DNA fingerprinting methods
