Insulin and insulin-like growth factor-I (IGF-I) mediate a variety of signals involved in mammalian development and metabolism and are considered as a major anabolic factors in skeletal muscle. IGF-I structure and some of its biological activities resemble those of insulin and include stimulation of glucose uptake and metabolism in myoblasts and adipocytes, acceleration of amino acid transport in fibroblasts, and enhanced glucose utilization by skeletal muscle. Regarding skeletal muscle protein metabolism, insulin and IGF-I are known to stimulate protein synthesis and inhibit protein degradation, thus creating protein anabolism
