An experiment was conducted in the Gezira Research Farm during the winter seasons of 2001102 and 2002/03 to study the effect of seed rate and sowing date on growth, development, plant population and forage dry matter of barley. Four seed rates, viz, 48, 96, 144 and 192 kglha and five sowing dates, viz, 1st Nov., 15th Nov., 1st Dec. and 15th Dec. in 2001 and 2002 and 1st Jan. in 2002 and 2003 were studied .The results showed that, on average, the highest dry matter of fodder yield (at milk stage) was obtained when the crop was sown on 1st Dec. in 2001and 15th Nov. and 1st Dec. in 2002. No significant differences were obtained between the seed rates in 2002/03 season. In 2001102 season, however, 96, 144 and 192 kglha invariably out yielded 48 kglha. Hence, the third week of Nov. could be considered as the optimum sowing date, and 96 kglha could be considered as the best seed rate for planting barley as forage in winter
