[Control of the hibiscus mealy bug (Maconellicoccus hirsutus) in Suriname. a comparative study of the chemical and biological control]

In 2001 the first heavy damages caused by the hibiscus mealy bug (Maconellicoccus hirsutus) on various plant sp. have been reported. Introduction of exotic natural enemies of hibiscus mealy bug leaded to success in the control of this pest. Because during heavy infestation farmers prefer chemical control, the efficacy of the systemic pesticide Actara was tested. The active ingredient of Actara is thiamethoxam. The effect of the Cryptolaemus montrouzieri bug, a predator of the hibiscus mealy bug, alone and in conbination with Actara was tested too. Testing took place in a cage experiment. Actara was applied via the drench technique. Further the toxicity of Actara on C. montrouzieri as well on M. hirsutus was tested. The following concentrations of Actara were used0,00,040,080,160,320,48 and 0,65 g/l. Actara was directly sprayed on the hibiscus mealy bug and its natural enemy. The cage experiment showed that the tratments with C. montrouzieri and Actara and C. montrouzieri alone suppresed the hibiscus mealy bug population. But Actara alone had no effect on the hibiscus mealybug population. The results of the Actara toxicity experiment shoed that the concentration that is recommended by the manufecturer (13 g/201 or 0,65 g/l) killed 96of the mealy bugs and 100of the C. montrouzieri bugs. Further is concluded that chemical control (Actara) is compatible with biological control (C. montrouzieri bugs), but at a lower concentration than is recommended. Actara at a concentration of 0,04 g/l killed 43of the hibiscus mealy bugs and 80of the C. montrouzieri bugs stayed alive
