Potentiality of the cotton plant bug, Megacoelum biseratense (Distant) (Hemiptera:Miridae) in becoming cotton key pest in the future

Potentiality of cotton plant bug, Megacoelum biseratense in becoming key pest of cotton was investigated at Suwan Farm, Pak Chong, Nakorn Ratchasima during 1996-1998. The numbers of plant bug increasing each year were compared with those of the jassid, and the 3-year average numbers of this mirid on the 2 mutant lines, AP1 and SP2, and the recommended variety, SR60 were also compared with those of jassid and American bollworm, the present cotton key pests. RCB was employed with 4 replications. The results revealed the average amounts of M. biseratense found on AP1 and AP2 not to be significantly different from the jassid while significantly different from the American bollworm. Yet the mean numbers of the three insects were statistically different from one another on SR60. In addition, the increasing and decreasing numbers of the plant bug on AP1 and AP2 was found to follow those of the jassid. The distinctly increase of M. biseratense including its puncturing of squares causing drying out and bud shedding indicates the trend of this mirid to become key pest of cotton in the future.
