Chemical control of thrips and broad mite attacking chilli

Thrips, Scirtothrips dorsalis Hood and Thrips palmi Karny (Thripidae: Thysanoptera), and broad mite, Polyphagotarsonemus latus Bank (Tarsonemidae: Acariformes) are major sap-sucking pests on chilli. Intensive pesticide applications were commonly used to control the pests. Two field experiments were conducted on Khon Kaen University Experimental Farm to evaluate the values of control by neem seed extracts and conventional pesticides. The RCBD with 3 replications was employed. Data from plant damage rating indicated low to moderate control from neem-treated plots. Conversely, chilli yields were superior in neem-treated plots than in diafenthiuron-treated (Experiment I) or carbosulfan-treated (Experiment II) plots. Applications of simple and enriched neem extracts (azadirachtin 0.13 percent) gave nonsignificant different results. Comparing the expense for control application, lower expenses were shown from neem treatments. The present results revealed that neem seed extract is warrented as an alternative, safe and environmental friendly biochemical pesticide for thrips and broad mite management on chilli.
