[Ukraine in the Ecologically Sustainable Development Index: realities and prospects for the future]

anglais. Clarified is the content and meaning of the Ecologically Sustainable Development Index (ESI), according to which the development of the countries from the ecological state is compared. In accordance with the index, the place of Ukraine is studied as compared to other countries. The advanced concept of compiling the ESI is described, including its certain drawbacks. Considered are the approaches to the following indices: "limitation of human vulnerability", "limitation of stresses", "limitation of air pollution", "limitation of the population load on the environment", "global management", "environmental systems", "social and industrial capabilities". According to each of the categories, Ukraine's place is determined as compared to other countries. Yet certain position give raise to some doubts through the insufficient scientific substantiation of some methodical approaches. Statistical data are analysed as well. Considered is an example of determining the index "limitation of human vulnerability" which requires using the Human Development Index. The necessity of more active Ukraine's participation in the environmental activities, speeding up the ratification of a number of international agreements on the environmental protection is stressed.

ukrainien. Роз'яснюється зміст і значення показника Індексу Екологічної Усталеності (ESI), за яким порівнюється розвиток держав з екологічного боку. Досліджується місце України за цим індексом порівняно з іншими державами світу. Відмічається прогресивна Концепція складання ESI в методології його складання та звертається увага на деякі недоліки. Розглядаються підходи до показників "обмеження уразливості людини", "обмеження стресу", "обмеження забруднення повітря", "обмеження тиску населення на довкілля", "глобальне управління", "системи навколишнього середовища", "соціальні та індустріальні можливості". За кожної категорії показників визначено місце України порівняно з іншими країнами, але через недостатню наукову обґрунтованість окремих методичних підходів деякі позиції викликають сумніви. Аналізуються й статистичні дані. Наведено приклад визначення показника "обмеження уразливості людини", який потребує використання Індексу людського розвитку. Відмічається недостатня активність України в міжнародній екологічній діяльності, надзвичайно повільна ратифікація ряду міжнародних угод із захисту довкілля.
