Small cob edible sweet corn Tien Whan Phitsanuloke variety

Improvements of the new sweet corn population were conducted since the late rainy season in 1995. Two open-pollinated varieties which contained shrunken-2 double recessive gene (sh2 sh2) were used as pollinator had been crossed with the seven native tien (waxy) corn varieties Khao Sukhoyhai, Sukhothai 1, Sukhothai 2, Phitsanuloke, Khao Nakornsri, Bang Pra and Ayuthaya. Seven hybrid populations were grown and selected. Selection based on stalk vigor downy mildew and pest resistance, prolific (multiple ears) and early flowering. The selection ears were harvested and bulk seeds using as the base population. The improvement of population were used recurrent selection by selfing the selected plants. The selection were emphasized on wrinkled seeds having shrunken-2 gene with white, light yellow and yellow seed color, small ear. Also the bite taste and cooking quality were examined. The bulk methods were employed for improving population for two seasons. The new population was obtained and called Tien Whan Phitsanuloke.
