Insect and mite species, feeding on Dipsacus spp. (Dipsacacea) in Bulgaria and their potential as bio-control agents
2006
Kharizanova, V. | Stoeva, A.
The current study is a part of an international project, running since 2003. The aim is to find phytophagous species, feeding on Dipsacus sp., and capable of destroying it or significantly reducing the seed production. At present, more than 30 insects and two mite species, feeding on various parts of the plant in different regions of Bulgaria, have been identified. Only 5 of them proved to be specific to the weed or to the family (Dipsacaceae), which does not include economically important cultivated species. The biology of some of the most promising ibsect and mite species has been studied in the field and under laboratory conditions. Data is given also about the distribution and largest populations of Dipsacus laciniatus and D. fullonum in Bulgaria.
