Estudios biológicos, formas teratológicas e hiperparásitos de Puccinia melanocephala.

Se estudió el efecto que ejerce la temperatura sobre la viabilidad, desarrollo del tubo germinativo, intensidad y dinámica de la germinación, así como la luz y los diferentes valores de humedades relativas para la germinación de uredósporas de Puccinia melanocephala H. & P. Syd. (sin: P. erianthi Padw. & Khan), agente causal de la roya de la caña de azúcar. El proceso germinativo puede efectuarse entre temperaturas de 15 a 30°C, con óptimas de 25°C. La luz influye favorablemente en la germinación y las uredósporas sólo pueden germinar a 100 % de la humedad relativa (HR) o en presencia de agua. Las uredósporas pierden rápidamente la viabilidad a altas temperaturas y se detectó una mayor viabilidad de esporas a 10°C. La incubación del hongo ocurre entre las primeras 24 a 48 horas a 20, 25 y 27°C y se requiere de una película fina de agua sobre la superficie de la hoja para que se efectúe la infección. Se informa la presencia de formas teratológicas en las teleutósporas de esta especie, así como la detección de siete hiperparásitos en los uredosoros, algunos de los cuales constituyen nuevos reportes, como son los casos de Fusarium tricinctum (Cda) Sn. & H. y Olpidium uredinis (Lagerh) Fish.

A study was made of the effect exerted by the temperature on the viability, the germ tube development, the germinative intensity and dynamics, as well as the light and the different relative humidity values for the germination of the uredospores of Puccinia melanocephala H. & P. Syd. (syn.: P. erianthi Padw. & Khan), causal agent of the sugarcane rust. The germinative process can take place at a temperature between 15 and 30°C with optimum at 25°C. Light has a favorable influence on germination, and the uredospores can only germinate at 100 RH or in the presence of water. The uredospores loose rapidly their viability at high temperatures and a higher spore viability has been detected at 10°C. The fungus incubation occurs in the first 24-48 hours at 20, 25 and 27°C, and a thin film of water is necessary on the leaf surface for the infection to take place. The presence of teratological forms is reported in the teleutospores of this species, as well as the detection of seven hyperparasites in the uredospores and some of them are new reports as for instance in the cases of Fusarium tricinctum (Cda) Sn. & H., and Olpidium uredinis (Lagerh) Fish.
