A partir de la detección en nuestras áreas plantaneras de una nueva sintomatología caracterizada por una necrosis en el rizoma y cuello de las plantas, se inició un muestreo provincial para conocer su distribución e incidencia. El presente trabajo recoge los resultados del rastreo realizado en las áreas plataneras de la Empresa V. I. Lenin de Matanzas y la determinación del agente causal. Se comprobó que la enfermedad se encontraba en el 68,7 % de las áreas evaluadas equivalentes a 272,71 ha. La variedad 'Vietnamita' fue la más afectada con un índice de infestación de 5,9 %. Se aisló y caracterizó al agente de esta patología como la bacteria Erwinia chrysanthemi Burkholder, Mc. Fadden y Dimock.

Since the detection of new symptoms in our banana plantations characterized by a necrosis of the rhizome and root crown of the plants, a sampling was started on national scale in order to know its distribution and incidence. This paper presents the investigation carried out in the banana plantations of the V. I. Lenin Enterprise in Matanzas province end the identification of its causal agent. It was ascertained that the disease was present in 68,7 % of the examined areas, ie 272,71 ha. The 'Vietnamese' variety was the most severely effected, with en infestation rate of 5,9 %. The causal agent was isolated and characterized as the bacterium Erwinia chrysanthemi Burkholder, Mc Fadder & Dimock.
