The introduction of new plant genetic resources has greatly contributed to the development of Brazil’s national agriculture, and most of Brazil’s economically important crops are derived from such introductions. However, with increasing economic globalization and the international exchange of plant germplasm, the risk of spreading crop pests has also increased. The objectives of plant protection and free trade intersect under the International Plant Protection Convention (IPPC) where the concept of “safe trade' 15 addressed through the global harmonization of phytosanitary measures. In that context, the Plant Quarantine Laboratory of “Embrapa Genetic Resources and Biotechnology' is developing a compendium of quarantine pests of concern to Brazil. In the first part of the program, a list of 135 organisms was developed by the “Comite de Sanidade Vegetal dos Países do Cone Sul' - COSAVE, which includes Brazil, Argentina, Paraguay, Uruguay and Chile. The database will include information on the nomenclature, common names, ecology, morphology and anatomy, geographical distribution, host range, symptoms and signs, movement and dispersal, damage and losses, detection, identification and diagnosis, and quarantine aspects of each of these pests. Ten crops have been prioritized: potato, wheat, corn, rice, cotton, grape, rose, peach, plum, nectarine, barley and grasses. We believe that this information will he of help to researchers who work with quarantine procedures, to quarantine officers of the Ministry of Agriculture, to students, to extension specialists, to farmers, and to the general public in their effort to avoid the introduction and dissemination of exotic pests into the country.
