Biomass energy for sustainable energy development
2004
Dereje Kebede
This paper describes some of the major projects and activities pursued with the objective of improving the efficiency of household biomass end-use devices and biomass conversion technologies. In particular focus is given on the development and dissemination of improve stoves including mirt and improved gounziye, trial and findings on improved traditional earth mound charcoal kiln - the 'Casamance', and production of agglomerated charcoal from cotton stalk. The potential for development and large-scale use of modern biomass energy technologies for the production of clean, high density and more versatile fuels such as biogas and ethanol as well as power generation is also briefly described. Attempt is made to provide highlights on the potential impacts of improved and modern biomass energy technologies, major constraints hindering their development and opportunities for their large-scale dissemination and use.
