Effect of planting date and intra-row spacing on seed quality and quantity of onion (Allium cepa L. c.v.Yellow Sweet Spanish) in Isfahan.

In order to studing effects of planting dates and intra-row spacings on quantitative and qualitative traits of onion seed (c.v. Yellow Sweet Spanish) an experiment was conducted in Kabootar Abad Research Station of Isfahan during 2002-2003 growing season. The experiment design was a split plot with a randomized complete block arrangement and four replications. Main factor included three planting dates (The 23nd Oct. , the 20nd Feb. and the 5nd Mar.), and sub factor included three intra-row spacings (15 , 20 and 30 centimetres). Seed yield , number of umbels/m 2 and capsules/umbel were increased significantly in first planting date as compared with second and third . Seed yield and umbels/m 2 increased significantly as plant space decreased from 30 to 15 centimeters. The number of capsules/umbel increased in 15 cm plant spacing as compared with the others. In this experiment planting dates and spacings, didn’t have significant effects on the number of seeds/capsule intra-row and 1000 seeds weight. Among yield components, umbels/m 2 and capsules/umbel had the most contribution in the seed yield variation. Plant spacings didn’t have significant effects on the seed germination percent and seed germination rate but in the first planting date , seed germination percent and seed germination rate, was higher than the two others.
