In order to develop salt tolerant pure lines , a diploid , multigerm pollinator ( 7233-P.29 ) and a cytoplasmic male sterile line ( MS C2 ) and its primary and secondary otypes (C2 and A1 . respectively ) were grown in a saline soil (EC = 14 – 16 mmohs / cm) in Esfahan and selection was carried out among them. On the basis of FAO report , the amount of salinity for 50% germination of sugar beet is 16 mmohs / cm which causes 50% of yield reduction (2). In this study , after selection of roots in Esfahan and their vernalization in Karaj , each single plant of pollinator 7233-P.29 cut into two pieces and along with a male sterile plant (MS C2) were grown under a cage to produce S1 and F1 seeds. Again , S1 and F1 seeds were grown under a cage to maintain the pollinator plant if the F1 is male sterile and to discared it if the F1 is not male sterile. Field and greenhouse tests showed that some of lines could maintain their male sterility up to 75% in S2 generation. So, the remained lines were discarded and 11crosses acompanied by a check material ( male and female parents ) were evaluated under EC= 16 mmohs / cm in Roodasht area in Esfahan and their quantitative and aualitative traits were determined. Results showed that hybrid of the lines 19 , 30 and 31 were superior than check in root yield and white sugar yield . Also, hybrid of the lines 28 and 12 were superior than check but not significantly different . Results showed that there are salt tolerant lines within the population 7233-P.29 which their S1 and S2 pure lines are needed. The highest and lowest root yield were observed in the hybrid of lines 19 and line 27 which were 66.19 and 35.24 T/ha , respectively. Mean comparison using LSD method showed that their difference were significant at 1% probabilitylevel. The highest sugar content ( 19.11%) was obtained from the hybrid of the line 28 but it was not significantly different from the other hybrids. The highest amounts of white sugar yield were 9.05 and 9.04 T/ha which belonged to the hybrids of the lines 9 and 5 , respectively , but their difference with some hybrids of the lines such as 26 , 27 and 28 was significant at 5% probablity level.
