Evaluation of seven most commonly grown cotton cultivars (Gossypium hirsutum L.) in North Greece. Productivity and fibre quality

anglais. The productivity and fibre properties (strength and length) of the seven most commonly grown cotton cultivars in two regions of North Greece (Giannitsa, Serres) were evaluated. The experiments lasted for 6 years (1995-2000). All the tested traits were strongly influenced by the factors cultivar and year, while mean boll weight, lint percentage and fibre length were also influenced by the factor region. Significant cultivar x region, year x cultivar, region x year and cultivar x region x year interactions occurred for all the studied traits. Cvs Christina, Corona and Bravo showed the highest seed-cotton yield, while Corona and Bravo showed also the highest lint yield. On the other hand, the two last cvs had low fibre strength and length. Christina, the most productive one in seed-cotton yield, had quite a long strong fibre, while its lint percentage was low. Tabladilla 16 had satisfactory seed-cotton and lint yields, intermediate lint percentage and high fibre properties. The less productive cvs were McNair 220, Vulcano and Eva. Vulcano also showed low lint percentage and fibre strength, Eva had high fibre properties and McNair 220 intermediate lint percentage and fibre length and the highest fibre strength. Mean boll weight did not influence productivity strongly, as it was not found to be correlated either to seed-cotton yield or to lint percentage. Positive correlation was observed between fibre strength and length. All traits were influenced by the factor year, due to different weather conditions. The year 1996 was the most unfavourable one for seed-cotton yield and mean boll weight, because it was characterized by lower than average air temperatures and rather dry conditions. [Dal 1995 al 2000 sono state valutate produttività e proprietà delle fibre (lunghezza e resistenza) delle sette cultivar di cotone maggiormente coltivate in due regioni del Nord della Grecia (Giannitsa, Serres). Tutti i caratteri erano influenzati dai fattori cultivar e anno, mentre il peso medio delle capsule, la percentuale di filaccia e la lunghezza delle fibre erano pure influenzati dal fattore regione. Per tutti i caratteri sono state registrate interazioni significative cultivar x regione, anno x cultivar, regione x anno e cultivar x regione x anno. Christina, Corona e Bravo hanno mostrato la resa più alta in seme, mentre Corona e Bravo presentavano anche la resa più elevata in filaccia. D´altro lato, le ultime due cv avevano bassa lunghezza e resistenza delle fibre. Christina, prima per la resa in semi, presentava fibra molto lunga e resistente, mentre la sua percentuale di filaccia era bassa. Tabladilla 16 presentava rese in semi e filaccia soddisfacenti, percentuale intermedia di filaccia e alta qualità delle fibre. Le cv meno produttive sono risultate McNair 220, Vulcano ed Eva. Vulcano ha evidenziato pure bassa percentuale di filaccia e bassa resistenza della fibra, Eva ha mostrato qualità elevata della fibra e McNair percentuale media di filaccia e valore medio della lunghezza e massimo della resistenza delle fibre. Il peso medio delle capsule non ha influenzato fortemente la produttività, dato che non era correlato con la produzione di semi e con la percentuale di filaccia. Si è osservata una correlazione positiva fra resistenza e lunghezza delle fibre. Tutti i caratteri erano influenzati dal fattore anno, per il variare delle condizioni atmosferiche. Il 1996, caratterizzato da temperature sotto la media e condizioni siccitose, è risultato l´anno più sfavorevole per la resa in semi e il peso medio delle capsule. Il fattore regione ha influenzato significativamente la percentuale di filaccia, il peso medio delle capsule e la lunghezza delle fibre.]
