Effect of seed treatment with certain biopesticides on root-knot of chickpea [Cicer arietinum L.; India]

The efficacy of three biopesticides based on Pochonia chlamydosporia, Trichoderma harzianum and Pseudomonas fluorescens was tested on the root-knot of chickpea caused by Meloidogyne spp. under field conditions. The biopesticides were applied to seeds of chickpea cv BG 256 at the rate of 2 g/kg seed along with the commercial rhizobium. Two thousand J2/kg soil were used as inoculum. Infection by the nematode caused 14 and 15 % decline in the dry weight and yield of chickpea, respectively, losses that were avoided when the biopesticides were applied. Dry weight and yield of nematode infected plants were significantly increased by application of P. fluorescens (31 and 34%) and P. chlamydosporia (28 and 25%), respectively. The dry weight and yield of chickpea not inoculated with the nematode was increased by 39 and 36% when P. fluorescens was applied. Seed treatment with fenamiphos resulted in 14 and 18% increase in dry weight and yield, respectively. Gall formation and egg mass production of root-knot nematodes was decreased by 23 and 18% by the application of P. chlamydosporia against 26 and 19% by fenamiphos. Treatment with P. fluorescens also significantly decreased the number of galls and egg masses, but less than treatment with P. chlamydosporia. Soil populations of the nematodes increased gradually during the growing season in the control plots, but decreased significantly when seeds were treated with P. chlamydosporia or P. fluorescens. Trichoderma harzianum did not significantly affect nematode pathogenesis. Rhizosphere populations of the bioagents increased both in the presence and absence of root-knot nematodes

[E' stata saggiata l'efficacia di tre biopesticidi basati su Pochonia chlamydosporia, Trichoderma harzianum e Pseudomonas fluorescens sulle galle radicali del cece causate da Meloidogyne spp., in condizioni di campo. I biopesticidi sono stati applicati ai semi di cece cv BG 256 alla dose di 2 g/kg di seme unitamente al rizobio commerciale. Come inoculo sono state utilizzate 2.000 J2/kg di terreno. L'infezione da parte dei nematodi ha determinato una diminuzione del 14 e del 15% del peso secco e della resa del cece, rispettivamente, perdite che erano evitate quando erano applicati i biopesticidi. Il peso secco e la resa produttiva delle piante infestate dai nematodi aumentavano significativamente con il trattamento con P. fluorescens (31 e 34%) e P. chlamydosporia (28 e 25%), rispettivamente. Il peso secco e la resa del cece non inoculato con i nematodi subivano un aumento del 39 e del 36% quando era applicato P. fluorescens. Il trattamento dei semi con fenamiphos si è tradotto nell'aumento del 14 e del 18% del peso secco e della resa, rispettivamente. La formazione di galle e la produzione di masse di uova dei nematodi galligeni sono diminuite del 23 e del 18% a seguito del trattamento con P. chlamydosporia rispetto al 26 e al 19% ottenuto con il fenamiphos. Anche il trattamento con P. fluorescens ha determinato una diminuzione del numero di galle e masse di uova, ma meno rispetto a quello con P. chlamydosporia. Le popolazioni di nematodi nel suolo sono aumentate gradualmente nel corso del periodo di crescita nelle parcelle di controllo, ma sono diminuite significativamente nel caso del trattamento dei semi con P. chlamydosporia o P. fluorescens. Trichoderma harzianum non ha influenzato significativamente la patogenesi dei nematodi. Le popolazioni di agenti biologici della rizosfera sono aumentate sia in presenza, sia in assenza dei nematodi.]
