Red mite, Dermanyssus gallinae; Ecology and latest problems in Japan
2006
Murano, T.(Chiba-ken. Livestock Research Center, Yachimata (Japan))
The morphology and ecology including blood-sucking behavior, propagation, host, habitat, and longevity of red mite (Dermanyssus gallinae), which causes a big damage to the poultry industry in Japan as the most problem arthropod, are described. The resistance of red mites against commercially available pesticides was investigated by in vitro test across the nation, and it was found that the sensitivity of red mite to the pesticides was decreased on most chicken farms in Japan. It seems to be difficult to control red mites with being currently used pesticides including foreign products. The control measures at present and the future directions are discussed.
