The paper, in the first part, after dealing with some general aspects of the relationship between biodiversity and agriculture and defining the levels of agro-biodiversity, covers the inter-specific relationships, reporting the biodiversity variations between 1950 and 2000, with particular reference to Southern Italy and in relation to some results of research, describing the issues related to weeds and cropping systems. The AA subsequently analyse the intra-specific expression (or genetic) of agro-biodiversity, exposing the causes which have determined the increasing genetic erosion in this sector; finally, some possible strategies for protection of biodiversity are reported. In the second part of the paper, biodiversity related to the species native of the Old World is synthetically treated, which for the historical importance or for the potential development could be considered representative of the agriculture of the Southern and Insular Italy, as wheat, faba bean, globe artichoke, pastures and biomass crops for energy

Il lavoro, nella prima parte, dopo aver enunciato alcuni aspetti generali relativi al rapporto tra biodiversità e agricoltura e definito i livelli della agrobiodiversità, si sofferma sui rapporti interspecifici, esponendo le variazioni della biodiversità nei sistemi colturali erbacei in Italia dal 1950 al 2000, con particolare riferimento al Meridione e in rapporto all'interesse del mondo della ricerca, descrivendo le problematiche inerenti al rapporto fra sistemi coltivati erbacei e malerbe. Successivamente, viene presa in esame l'espressione intraspecifica (o genetica) dell'agro-biodiversità, esponendo le cause che hanno determinato la progressiva erosione genetica in questo settore; infine, vengono esposte alcune possibili strategie di intervento per il mantenimento della biodiversità. Nella seconda parte viene trattata sinteticamente la biodiversità relativa ad alcune specie originarie del Vecchio Mondo, che, per importanza storica o per potenzialità di sviluppo, possono essere considerate rappresentative dell'agricoltura dell'Italia Meridionale e Insulare, quali il frumento, la fava, il carciofo, i pascoli e alcune colture da energia
