Effect of storage duration on the growth and yield of multiplier onion (Allium ascalonicum L.)

A field experiment in randomized complete block design was conducted to determine the effect of different storage duration on the growth and yield of multiplier onion. The bulbs were stored in a wooden crate for 5, 10, 35, 50 and 65 days under normal room temperature. This was replicated three times. The duration of storage prior to planting significantly significantly influenced the mortality rate, days to bulb formation, and plant height and harvest. The highest mortality rate of 29.40 percent was noted in plants stored for 5 days. Mortality rate tended to decrease as storage duration is increased. On the other hand, bulb formation was significantly earlier under storage condition of 35, 50 and 65 days. It appears that the minimum storage duration of multiplier onion prior to planting is 35 days, and extending the storage duration up to 65 days causes no significant effect on the initiation of bulb formation. Further, plant height at harvest was significantly shorter in longer storage duration. The highest return on investment (ROI) of 112.72 percent was noted in 50 days storage duration and the lowest ROI of 49.56 percent was obtained from plants with the least storage duration of 5 days. The highest ROI was attributed to more number of developed bulbs causing heavier fresh weight of plants or higher yield per plot.
