Studies were carried out in 1997-2000 in Poland on Jonica, Elstar, Sampion and Gala apple trees. Two degrees of flower or fruitlets thinning by hand were applied at four times (at blossom, 2 weeks after blossom, and before and after June drop). Chemical thinning with Pomonit R 10 (K salt NAA, 40 ml/cubic dm) was also applied. Unthinned trees were used as control. It was found out that return bloom after thinning depends on apple cultivar, early time and intensity of thinning improve flower bud initiation, return bloom of biennial bearing cultivar Elstar is poor and almost independent of time and intensity of thinning, climatic conditions affected both factors of biennial bearing fruit setting and flower bud initiation
