Evaluation of the effect of pollution emitted by the Chemical Works Police in the years 1969-2000 on annual tree-ring increments of Scots pine from selected research plots in the primeval forest Puszcza Wkrzanska, Forest Inspectorate Trzebiez Pt. 2. Changes of average annual growth ring widths of Scots pine

Application of dendrochronological analysis at the research on the impact of industrial pollution on pine trees allowed to correlate reductions of annual tree-ring increments with location and distance of a research plot from the emission source, quantity of pollutants falling out, and with sulphur and fluorine contents in pine needles. Comparison of average tree-ring widths of Scots pine throughout its whole development cycle indicates that these values gradually decreased with the age of forest stands. Moreover, the growth rate distinctly decreased after the start of production in the Chemical Works Police, especially in the period of the highest emission of air pollutants. Except for the reference research plot 2, in all the remaining plots the lowest values of annual tree-ring widths were noted in the mid-1980s. In the last analysed period (1991-2000) an increase of tree-ring widths was observed, which was due to significantly lower emission of pollutants and improvement of the habitat fertility, brought about by an input of nitrogen compounds with wet and dry precipitation. In the period of the highest emission of pollutants (1980-89) very distinct reduction of annual ring widths, of 49 and 38 percent, occurred in the research plots 4 and 5, respectively, situated north-west from the emission source.
