In this paper we discuss one of the main factors of sustainable development, which is correctly implemented small retention reservoirs. The main condition of that is however, that reservoirs of this are fitted into the natural environment of the catchment, taking into consideration urbanization and changing type of river valleys development. Operation of small retention reservoirs and their impact depend on their size and location. Authors introduce a division of small retention reservoirs into two types: microretention and small reservoir retention. An interpretation of small retention term is also presented in this paper. The basic rule for designing small retention reservoirs should be their harmonious coexistence with other elements of the environment, together with present and proposed urban development. Taking this into consideration the authors presented the need, possibility and scope of ecological and landscape analysis to be done during initial planning and designing of small retention reservoirs
