The investigations were done in the years 1962-97 at the Station of Plant Irrigation near Wroclaw (Poland), on a light soil of the valuation class IV a and b, belonging to a rye complex. The following perennial fodder plant species were tested: cocksfoot, tall oatgrass, fescue grass, timothy grass, Italian ryegrass, white-pink clover, red clover, bastard lucerna and their mixtures, and also meadow and pasture plants. It was found that irrigation caused an increase of the yield of all the studied crops, but it depended on the weather, the dose of sprinkler water and fertilization. From the point of view of feeding, sprinkling negatively affected the nutritional value of many of the analysed plants, inducing a decrease of raw protein content in them. On the contrary, nitrogen fertilization had a positive effect in this respect
