Changes in acreage structure in Poland in the period between the last two agricultural censuses 1996-2002 were surveyed and the effects of acreage structure on plant and animal production organizations, its intensities, economic results and environmental effects. The small farms, in area groups from 1 to 10 ha represented 80.6 percent of total farms number. Farms in the acreage groups 10-50 ha reach favourable environmental effects measured by a balance of reproduction and degradation of organic matter in soil. With respect to economic efficiency and environmental effects the growth in number of farms in the area groups of 15-20, 20-30 and 30-50 ha should be supported
