In the semiarid conditions of the northern part of the region of Backa, Vojvodina Province (Serbia), the maintenance of soil moisture and the achievement of optimum structure of soil macro-aggregates are the main targets of correct land bedding for sugar beet and the other spring crops. The trial included the following variants: control (plowing open furrows during winter); 1) leveling and pulverizing in spring; 2) three pulverizings in spring; 3) two pulverizings and one smooth rolling in spring; 4) disking, seedbed preparation, and pulverization in spring; 5) disking and two pulverizations in spring; 6) disking and pulverization in spring; 7) standard (disking and leveling in fall, pulverization in spring). The aim was ascertain the best time and method of seedbed preparation for sugar beet. It was concluded on the basis of results of the three-year trial that the most favourable soil structure, with the highest percentage of macro-aggregates of 0.25-5.0 mm was in the standard variant. The poorest soil structure, was variant 1 and variant 6 which containing macro-aggregates larger than 10 mm. The dynamics of soil moisture in the course of sugar beet season was significantly higher in the standard variant than in variants 1 to 4. It follows that the best variant of seedbed preparation for sugar beet in the location of Telecka plateau, in respect to soil moisture and structure, is the disking and leveling in fall and the pulverization in spring.
