Achillea alexandri-regis is a stenoendemic species of Serbian flora, found only on its locus classicus, mountain Osljak (southern Serbia). Investigation of the aerial parts of Achillea alexandri-regis led to the identification of 19 chemical constituents. The methanol extract showed antifungal activity against selected dermatomycetes. Combined chloroform and ethylacetate extracts exhibited a pronounced cytotoxic effect against HeLa cancer cells, and lower cytotoxicity against K562 leukemia cells. Methanol extract was found to be moderate cytotoxic in vitro agent against HeLa and K562 cells. No suppressor activity on non-malignant periferal blood mononuclear cells (PBMC) was detected. The methanol extract of A. alexandri-regis showed concentration dependant DPPH radical scavenging activity with an IC50=36.14+/-0.05 microgram/ml. The methanol extract showed modulatory effect on inflammatory process with influence on inflammatory cells accumulation, cells apoptose and production of cytokine important for inflammatory process (NO and TNF-alfa) and healing wounds. The methanol extract and three isolated compounds (3,4-O-dicaffeoylquinic acid, pinoresinol-beta-D-glucoside and rutin) exibited immunosuppressive activity in vitro.
