In order to identify the most favourable cultivars for livestock nutrition and malt production under agro-ecological conditions in Serbia, a number of spring and winter barley cultivars bred at the Small Grains Centre in Kragujevac, Serbia, were used in the trial. The Kragujevac spring and winter barley cultivars were characterized by the stalk height of 70-100 cm, good lodging and disease resistance, high yield and plump and highly filled kernels. Based on the grain yield values obtained it can be inferred that all cultivars produced satisfactory results, and the highest yield was achieved by Jagodinac and Record, two-rowed winter barley cultivars. The Jagodinac cultivar is a malting type of barley of excellent technological quality, and the Record cultivar can be used for malt production or livestock nutrition. The spring cultivars produced lower average yield and expressed a stronger response to variable agro-environmental conditions. As regard cultivar selection for the brewing industry the greatest attention should be focused on genotypes with higher germination energy and lower protein content such as Jagodinac and Maksa in winter cultivars and Dunavac and Dinarac in spring ones.
