Encephalitozoonosis is characterised as an infection in rabbits with a prevailingly chronic asymptomatic course of a disease. There are a growing number of cases with the occurence of clinical neurological signs manifesting themselves as thorticollis, opisthotonus, circumvolute movements, loss of weight and asthenia of the hind-limbs, all of them pointing to an encephalitozoonosis. Recently there has been increasing interest in domestic rabbit breeding, especially in the breed Nederland Dwarf of Oryctolagus cuniculus. Our case report is the first communication about the spontaneous encephalitozoonosis of this breed of rabbits in Slovakia. In order to diagnose the pathogenic agent of the disease, both methods - the indirect immunofluorescence test (IFAT) based on the detection of specific antibodies to Encephalitozoon cuniculi in the serum of the rabbit and the direct visualisation of spores in the faeces samples of the infected rabbit by means of an optical brightener Calcofluor White M2R-were used. In Slovakia, the spores of E.cuniculi were first isolated from the kidneys and brain of an animal and subsequently cultivated in the cell line RK 13.
