The excised hypocotyls of six genotypes of tomato (Lycopersicon esculentum Mill.)were exposed to kinetin, osmotic stress (polyetylenglycol, PEG) and kinetin + osmotic stres (PEG) in in vitro condition. The stress factor limited the growth of explants, especially content of water, free and dry weight, growth of hypocotyls, content of photosynthetic pigments. Osmotic stress caused free prolin accumulation in hypocotyls. Kinetin did not modify physiological and biochemical responses of hypocotyls under water stress. Between genotypes statistically significant differences were found. The use of in vitro culture allowed the elucidation of the tested responses.
