Use of yellow traps in rapeseed protection against pests

Rapeseed is attacked by a number of pests in Serbia both during the autumn and spring parts of the growing seasons. The most economically important among them are various species of the genus Phyllotreta as well as the species Psylliodes chrysocephala and Athalia rosae L. in the autumn and the species Meligethes aeneus Fabr., Ceutorrhynchus quadridens L. and C. napi Gyll. in the spring. Other pests are found less commonly. Of the polyphagous pests, second generation caterpillars of the species Agrotis segetum Schif. can cause significant damage in some years. Use of yellow traps provides information on the beginning and dynamics of crop infestation for the majority of the economic pests of rapeseed, which makes it easier to prognosticate their occurrence and carry out pest-specific control measures. Yellow traps are an essential and inherent part of integrated pest protection in rapeseed. They come in different shapes but are most often round or rectangular and of the same colour as rapeseed flowers. They are placed along each side of the field 10 meters away from the edges of the plot. There should be no more than 10 traps per field and a minimum of four (one on each side). The traps are filled with water, which should be emptied and replaced as often as possible (at two-to-three-day intervals).
