Dietary intake of benzoic acid and its salts by average consumers of the Slovak Republic was estimated. Based on statistical data of food consumption structure in 2002 and using the Food Research Institute Food Data Bank, a model of the weekly menu was created. Another model menu respected recommended dietary intakes of individual nutrients and foods. Intake of benzoic acid and benzoates was calculated and compared with the ADI value. Results were overestimated by a presumption that benzoic acid and bezoates were present at maximum permitted levels in all foodstuff as permitted by the Slovak Food Codex. In spite of that, the real intake of these additives obviously represented only a tenth part of the ADI value. Considering recommended nutrition, similar intake of benzoic acid and benzoates was estimated.
