Karyotypes of some plants (Amorphophallus spp.) and animals (Rana rugulosa and Bufo spp.) were investigated. Firstly, research on Rana rugulosa focused on their karyotypes and sex chromosomes which have not yet been identified. This study compared the karyotypes between males and females by using conventional staining methods. It was found that the chromosome numbers and chromosome structure in both males and females were similar (2n=26). G-band and C-band stainings were conducted in order to indicate the positions of the nucleolar organizer regions and also to check on the type of replication banding. It was found that the 13 pairs of chromosomes were homornorphic since no differences in each pair of chromosomes were deteced between these male and female frogs. In addition, a survey and karyotypic study of 4 species of toads in the genus Bufo in Thailand namely Bufo melanostictus Schneider, Bufo asper Garvenhost, Bufo macrotis Boulenger and Bufo parvus Boulenger was conducted. The results showed that all four species have the same chromosome numbers (2n=22), and the chromosomes are relatively identical in shape and size. Chromosomal studies of only two species of Bufo have previously been reported. They were B. melanosticus and B. parvus, whose karyotypic formula was not revealed in those studies. Therefore, this karyotypic study of the genus Bufo in Thailand can be considered to be complete. The last research comprised karyotic studies of 14 species of elephant yams in the genus Amorphophallus, Family Araceae and a species of the genus Tacca, Family Taccaceae. From the 15 species studied, eight species each had a chromosome number of 2n=26 and seven species each had a chromosome number of 2n=28. All of the elephant yams had an asymmetrical karyotype. The chromosome numbers of two species, Amorphophallus campanulatus Bl. Ex Decne, and Tacca leontopelaloides Kize., had previously reported. This is the first report of chromosome numbers for on the other 13 species of elephant yams.
