Orchids are the most important cut flowers in Thailand 60 percent of which are expected. In 1993, Thailand exported 748.6 million baths worth of cut-orchids. Orchid growers usually raise different cultivars and replant them every 3-4 years. As there is limited research on cultivars that are in great demand, growers have problems choosing cultivars for replanting. A study of a trend in the use of orchid cultivars including those in great demand from 1993-1996 will be useful to growers and breeders. The method of study is the interview. Thirteen major export companies and a hundred growers randomly chosen from Samut Sakorn, Nakorn Pathom and Bangkok were interviewed. The study seem to indicate that generally cut orchids that have been produced and exported in great value to Japan, Italy, the USA, Germany, the Netherlands and other countries are still good for export. The group the has the greatest export value includes pink round-from dendrobium, white round-from dendrobium, pink narrow-petal dendrobium, and white narrow-peal dendrobium. Second in export value are pink mokara, pink aranda, oncidium and red dendrobium. The popularity of the purple dendrobium seems to decrease in all markets except that of the USA. The most important effect is that exporters realize that cut orchid for expert must be of good quality and the prize must be competitive with other countries while the growers realize that there are markets for the first group. The research and promotion of cut orchids for 1993-1996, should emphasize that good quality is of vital importance in the market. After that, various cultivars in the group that have potential for export should be developed and their quantity should be increased to meet the increasing demand. The exchange of information between growers and exporters should be promoted to avoid prize war and the market we have should be maintained.
