As part of a European Commission - funded project entitled Social Forestry and Nature conservation in Nghe an Province (SFNC), since 1997 a scientific research program on Pumat Nature Reserve (National Park to day)has been conducted 1997. As a result of these activities Pumat became a famous for biodiversity among the Nature Reserves of Vietnam. A series of biodiversity survey were carried out during 1998-1999 by the staff of Nature Reserve in cooperation of many scientists, including foreigners. To date 127 plant specie s belonging to 607 genera, 160 families, 6 divisions have been confirmed to occur at Pumat NP. Among them 37 species were listed in the Red Data Book of VN, 20 species were found in the IUNC Red Book. The surveys confirmed the presence of 132 faunal species and sub - species of 30 families, 11 orders making up 59,19 percent of total faunal species of the country. However the obtained achievement do not meet the requirements of conservation works. It is recommended that scientific research should be further promoted and investment in research should be enhanced.
