During the period 20032004 in the experimental field of the Institute of Forage Crops, Pleven at natural population density of the insect pest complex a field trial was carried out with insecticidal preparations for presowing treatment of lucerne seeds. It was found that at emergence the lucerne plants were attacked to the greatest extent by soil inhabiting insect species mainly belonging to Coleoptera order. Dominant species were as follows: Opatrum sabulosum L. (30.11%) and Tanymecus dilaticollis Gyll. (22.42%) from the group of beet weevils Curculionidae family and subdominant ones: lucerne leaf beetle Phytodecta fornicata Brugg (10.55%), Colaphellus sophiae Schall (9.89%), cereal carabid beetles of genera Amara и Harpalus (8.13%) and lucerne weevil Otiorrhynchus ligustici L. (7.3%). The insect pest caused damages at the early and critical stage of lucerne development injuring the underground and overground mass the plants were weak and not strong enough. The results of the studies showed that among the insecticidal preparations for presowing lucerne seed treatment included in the trial the following preparations had the fastest initial action: Carbodan 2 and 3 l/100 kg seeds (90.889.1% and 93.490.6% for the years 2003 and 2004, respectively). The tested preparations had a long residual effect. Two weeks after the plant emergence the efficacy with regard to the insect pest complex was 70.0 to 82.9%. The results for Promet were also satisfactory. The preparations did not decrease the laboratory and field seed germination and were not phytotoxic. They positively effect on the dry root mass and the exceeding was from 6 to 24% as compared to the untreated control. The presowing seed treatment is an ecological method of insect pest complex during plant emergence and growth by which a protective zone is created round the seed itself protecting it from soil pests.
