Research results of history, present state and perspectives of bioengineering modifications of potato (Solatium tuberosum L.) in the Republic of Belarus, USA and Europe were presented. Reviews of the world market of commercial transgenic varieties, data on increased potato tolerance to insect, fungal and viral pathogens and abiotic stresses were presented. Historic review of potato genes transformation by means of Bacillus thuringiensis, Agrobacterium tumefaciens was presented. Results of potato transgenesis for the increasing of potato resistance to Verticillium dahliae, Phthorimaea operculella, Phytophtora infestans, Halobacterium halobium, Trichoderma harzianum, alternaria solani, Botrytis cinerea and Trichoderma viride were observed. Problems of potato metabolic bioengineering and nutritive value improvement were discussed. Use of transgenic potato in biomedicine and potential side effects of transgenesis were analyzed
