[Rooting characteristics of upland rice cultivars grown under stress of weeds allelophatic residu]

The experiment was aimed to investigate rooting characteristics (radicle length, root elongation, root volume, root dry weight) of three upland rice cultivars (Maninjau, Tondano dan Danau Bawah) grown under stress of purple nutsedge and cotton grass allelophatic residues. The experiment was carried out at Plant Ecology Laboratory and Agronomy Experimental Field and consisted of two experiments, i.e: first, finding the different responses of three upland rice cultivars in germination phase, and observing their root growth responses in rhizotron. The data was arranged in Completely Randomized Design. Three treatments for the first experiment were: application of purple nutsedge extract, cotton grass extract and no weed extract. Three treatments in rhizotron were: application of purple nutsedge residue, cotton grass residue, one was untreated. Each treatment was replicated three times. The result showed that allelophatic substance had no effects on total germination, but most germination were delayed. The allelophatic stress had inhibited radicle length rather than plumulae length. The inhibitation on Danau Bawah cultivar was slighter than those of Maninjau or Tondano. Results from the second experiment showed that under allelophatic circumstances, Danau Bawah cultivar possessed better rooting features, such as root distribution, root elongation and other growth parameters than those of Maninjau or Tondano. It's better rooting system contributed to a better shoot growth.
