Distribution and population of lutung (Trachypithecus auratus sondaicus) in Pangandaran Natural Reserve (Indonesia)

Study of distribution and population of Javan Lutung in Pangandaran Natural Reserve and Recreational Park has been conducted between July and August 2003, by using cruising and census methods. The result indicates that, in general the distribution of lutung in Pangandaran Natural Reserve and Recreational Park are not evenly distributed. The distribution of lutung in the Recreational Park is more concentrated than in the Natural Reserve. In the Recreational Park are there are 7 lutung groups with density of group among 18-26 groups/Km2, and in the Natural Reserve there are also 7 groups with density 3.5 groups/Km2. In the last 20 years, number of lutung group in the Recreational Park fluctuates between 7 and 10 groups, and the total number of individual decreases from about 156 individuals in the year 1979, 130 individuals in 1988, and about 101-109 individuals in 2003.
