Rabit is one of the oldest among the livestock species in history. It contributes wool/fur, meat, manure and pelt. In India Himachal Pradesh, Uttaranchal, Jammu and Kashmir, parts of Andhra Pradesh, Karnataka, Tamil Nadu, Rajasthan, West Bengal, sikkim and hilly parts of north-eastern states are the main rabbit rearing areas. Rabbit can be raised in the farmer's backyard on kitchen wastes with sincerity. Relatively lower temperature favours the species to grow better. Scientifically raised backyard rabbitry can play an important role in improving the nutrition and economic status of a large number of rural populations, particularly poor and landless families. In China, backyard rabbitry now-a-days is a very popular enterprise. Commercial rabbitry recently entered into farmers backyard to fulfill household nutrition and for better earnings.
