Collaborative research for integrating and sharing data on olive pest management and functional biodiversity: the RIOM [Research and Innovation for Olive Growing in Southern Italy] project design

Recent advances in pest management research have clearly shown the limits of traditional field-scale studies. Landscape ecology, area-wide and multivariable approaches are essential for a better understanding of entomological problems. But this often implies the cooperation of a large number of investigators, with a subsequent need for effective coordination and data sharing. Here we describe methodologies and tools designed to integrate different data sources, research objectives and spatial scales, and to share information among project partners and with local stakeholders in a collaborative research approach. The RIOM project (Research and innovation for olive growing in southern Italy) involves several geographically distributed research teams and tackles different scopes, one of which is pest management. We have developed the RIOMweb online system, based upon Aedita, a software tool designed for agro-environmental data management and processing. The system integrates open source GIS software tools, allowing for landscape analysis, data georeferencing and simple geostatistical analyses. A hierarchy of users has been created, corresponding to different access to data and applications. Expected advantages concerning research enhancement, training of users and spin-offs on other stakeholders are highlighted, together with potential difficulties.
