Role of bark beetls in transmission of Cytospora canker of apple and cheery.

In recent years, there has been considerable damage of shot-hole borer and cytosporiose diseases on twigs, branches and trunks of apple and sweet cherry trees in the orchards of Tehran province. The marginal sides of holes have necrotic blotches and we separated Cytospora leucostoma fungus after culturing in M.A medium. In 2002 we collected some apple and cherry infected branches from different regions of Tehran province. After that we cultured them in PDA and M.A mediums and we got 10 Cytospora isolate. 9 isolate of them are C.leucostoma. The cytosporiose agent has been isolated to find out the possible role of shot-hole borers in transferring the diseases we have conducted some observations indicating the patogenecity of the isolates.The experimentations have been carried out, based on the following treatments: 1 andrsquoTow pairs of scolytids on each experimental young tree.2 andrsquoSpraying of cytospora suspension on young tree branches.3 andrsq uoTwo pairs of scolytids covered with the cytospora suspension.4 andrsquoControl. These experiments have been done with three replications for apple and sweet cherry separately and using two years-old treeseach replicate has one young tree. Based on the results, the scolytids transfer the propagules of the diseases inside the plant, resulting in necrosis. This phenomenon makes us to put more emphasis on the importance of scolytids.
