The effect of plant density and sowing date on kernel yield and yield components of late Promising corn hybrids

An experiment was conducted during 2003-2004 in Nyshabour and Mashhad Agricultural Research Stations for evaluating the grain yield responses of two promising late corn hybrids (Sc 700 and Sc 720 ) and a commercial hybrid (Sc 704), to planting date and densities. Hybrids planted at 13 May, 23 May and 2 June with harvest densities 65000, 75000 and 85000 plant/ha. A RCBD with split plot –factorial arrangement and four replications was used. Sowing date were in main plot and the factorial of hybrids x densities were in sub plot. Delaying planting reduced grain yield in Nyshabour (13/8 t/ha, 13/7 t/ha and 12/8 t/ha) and Mashhad (11/44 t/ha, 10/18 t/ha and 10/21t/ha) that was not significant in Nyshabour, but significant in Mashhad, respectively .Increasing plant densities also increased grain yield highly significnat in Nyshabour (12/27 t/ha, 13/26 t/ha and 13/75 t/ha), but non significant in Mashhad (10/4 t/ha, 10/66 t/ha and 10/77 t/ha). The commercial hybrid have yielded better than promising hybrids in both locations, but differences were singnificant only for Nyshabour (13/73 t/ha, 12/68 t/ha, 13/27 t/ha, and 11/78 t/ha, 10/01 t/ha, 10/04 t/ha) respectively. Differences between the second and third levels of all treatments were not signifincant in both locations. The over all results were similar to locations, but grain yield was higher in Nyshabour because of early frost damaged for 2 June sowing date in Mashhad at second year (13/22 t/ha and 10/61 t/ha). Therefore the planting date of 13 May and commercial hybrid with plant density of 75000/ha can be recommended to farmers in both location.
