The effects of soap on the growth of major fungi contaminating the bathroom

Although soap and its leftover pieces in bathrooms have long been said to serve as a nutrient for fungi, there is no scientific evidence to support it. Hence, we examined the effect of soap on the growth of major fungi contaminating the bathrooms. The results showed that commercially available ordinary soap did not serve as a nutrient for test fungi but suppressed their growth. On the other hand, the hyphal growth and conidia formation of Cladosporium sp. were confirmed in the keratin adhering to pieces of soap left to harden and lose its original quality. From the above results, we conclude that fungi could not grow on the soap but grew on dirt adhering to leftover pieces of soap.
